(6/20) Recap of our 2nd TATUR Meeting

TATUR Meeting Notes

Tatur Meeting #3 at the shelter at LaFortune Park

(6/20) We had a great time at the monthly TATUR Meeting Tuesday night. We had a table full of food including some GU Lasagna, potato salad, chips, fresh fruit, watermelon, cookies, drinks and some raw eggs.

In attendance were Eric Lukenbill, Tara McGowen, Charlie Willsey, The Divine Miss Marolyn Allred, Dan Threlkeld, Mike and Diana Snyder, Ken and Dana Childress, Sue Mallen, Brian Hoover Kathy Sager, Amanda McCollum, Mark Plate, Randy, Marci, and Nicole Ellis, Patty Powell, Marvin and MaryAnne Winters, and Johnny and Debbie Spriggs.

Dan Threlkeld started us out and talked about many subjects including the Mother Road, motivation, training runs and the upcoming Turkey and Taturs 50K Race. Ken Childress then explained the details of the first TATUR Fun Run, The Barkley Book Fair, which will be held July 15th, 2006. Brian Hoover talked about trying to raise $$ for the T&T 50K race.

We then played a game of egg toss that Randy and Nicole Ellis won. They took home a great prize that is not only oval and white, it is is also edible. They won an incredible "edible egg". We then hung out and told lies about past races and made commitments on future races that we know we will not be able to keep.

We also struggled to eat the Gu lasagna. Sue Mallen was the only successful individual. She said the secret was to spread more Orange flavor on the top to kill all the other flavors in between.

Upcoming TATUR Sponsored Races

TATUR is happy to announce that we will be organizing THREE trail races within the next year. Who woulda thunk it??? Well here are the three races that will be coming up:

Date: July 2006
The Barkley Tatur-Thons. This will be the inaugural club race. Ken Childress will be organizing this run which will be be modeled after the infamous Barkley Marathons. The basic premise is that you will run up at Turkey Mountain. The catch is that you will have to find hidden books and rip the page that matches your bib number to prove that you have been to the appointed place. There will be maps and this race will be open to novice as well as seasoned trail runners. Ken and I are still working out the details, but feel free to email Ken for questions or suggestions. There will be no charge for this event, however there will be donation buckets to help fund the upcoming TATUR 50K race.

Date: Sunday September 17th, 2006

Mark and clear your calendars. The TURKEY and TATURS 50K/25K/8K is an exciting and new to the Tulsa Area. It is scheduled for Sunday September 17th. It will attract some of the most elite trail runners in the area and will showcase the amazing trails that we are lucky to have at Turkey Mountain. This will be costly endeavor and we hope to get support from the local running community and you all to help fund this race. The four most important things that are needed to put on a race like this are:

1) $$$$ (Sponsors, Donations, Fund-Raising Etc.)

2) Volunteers-- Mark the 20 miles of course with fluorescent ribbon, organize music and entertainment, pre-race set-up, hand-out race packets and shirts, fill water bottles at aid stations, organize food at aid stations, gophers, record finish times, grill hamburgers & hot-dogs, clean-up after the race, help on the race web site, and most importantly, solicit donations to help fund this extravaganza. The race will cost between $1,000 - $3,000 depending on how good of a show we want to put on. Proceeds will benefit TATUR and the Westside YMCA.

3) Race Participants. As much as we would love to accommodate everyone, we will have to limit this race to 100 participants.

4)Cheerleaders- people who mention the TURKEY and TATURS 50K/25K/8K to friends, enemies, strangers, families.

If you know of anyone that could help us out, it would be greatly appreciated. We will put out a needs checklist shortly.

Date: Mid April, 2007

Lake McMurtry Trail Run. Earl Blewett has directed this race for the past eight years and is ready to slowly phase TATUR in. Just like the Turkey and Taturs 50K this race will showcase Oklahoma as a trail running destination.

Johnny Spriggs returns from the Bighorn 50 MilerNew

(6/16) On Friday June 16th, Johnny headed to the 5th Annual Bighorn Trail 100 Mile Run.

Johnny drove over fourteen hours to reach the start line, battled elevations above 8,000 feet above sea level and very warm temperatures. The elevation changes alone would make any normal person wither up and die. But Johnny battled on till mile 28.5 where race officials, nurses and paramedics determined that he was too dehydrated to go on. They asked Johnny to voluntarily quit, he refused, and and they made the decision to pull him of the coarse. So chalk up another marathon for Mr .Johnny. Next up for Johnny is a little race called the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon. What a great life you lead Johnny!!!

Tulsa Triathlon Tamed By Three TATURs

Brian Hoover, Kathy Sager, Alex Eaton and Ken Childress at the 2006 Tulsa Triathlon

(6/11) On Sunday June 11th, Alex Eaton, Kathy Sager, and Scott Ostrem, swam almost a mile (1500 meters) biked for 40 kilometers then ran a 10K. This Olympic distance triathlon was on an extremely hilly course and was contested in very hot temperatures. Alex placed second in his age group with a time of 2:55:02. Scott came in fourth overall with a time of 2:10:20. Kathy used this race as a training day and had a lot of fun doing so. Kathy finished in 3:25:54. Kathy Ostrem, Scott Ostrem and Lisa Wei- Haas were largely responsible for organizing this race along with the Tulsa Area Triathletes. TAT put on a great show and everyone enjoyed the fierce competition and friendly atmosphere. Please look at TATUR Results for a picture and split results.

Lake McMurtry 25K/50K Sauna Run

lmtrstart

Nine TATURS lined up for the Lake McMurtry Trail Run. Earl Blewett gave us last minute instructions, then we were off.

(4/15) Wow!! Was it hot enough for you all. I think my sweat was sweating. A few of us got turned around, some of us puked, and I think all of us learned that walking is mandatory in 95° heat. What a great race and great friendship was had by all. Some of us got to know each other better, we got in a little exercise, ate some barbeque, drank some beer, swam in the water, how could ya ask for a better day.

A special congratulations go out to Sarah Huhn and Mike Snyder for completing their first 25K trail run, and to Steve Huhn for finishing his first 50K ultra. Lets see some race reports from everyone. If you have never written one here is your chance. Not only do we all want to hear about your adventure, writing a race report also is a great tool to remind you what you did right and what you should have changed when you look back on your past races.

By the way if you don't want to see some BLOOD AND GUTS Don't look at the Leap O' Doom Link

Johnny Spriggs & Earl Blewett compete in the Rockin K Trail Run.

(4/1) Congratulations Johnny and Earl. The Rockin K Trail Run was held on Saturday April 1st in Kanopolis State Park, Marquette KS. Johnny said that the temperature was 82° and very windy. This course is like a roller coaster of ups and downs and has many stream crossings with a couple that are waist high. Early reports are that Earl was battling asthma and sinus problems and to make matters worse he was running with two girls and went off course for over a mile. Johnny re-injured his foot but still managed to finish the marathon in 6:16. Rockin K Results

Good job both of you and we can't wait to see some pics and detailed race reports.

The Barkley

(4/1) If you have never heard of the Barkley Marathons, here is a suggestion, Google it. It is the toughest, most infamous 100 mile race in the world. It is shrouded in mystery, misconceptions and awe. April 1st marked another installment of this crazy race. If I am not mistaken, not a single individual finished it this year. Well there is always the "Fun Run", which is only 60 miles..... Do ya think anyone finished the itty bitty fun run? Do you think you could even run 20 miles of this race? If you have a $1.55, why not give it a shot.
