Pacer Information

  1. 50K runners may not have a pacer.
  2. Pacers will be allowed for all 100K and 100 mile runners AFTER the first 50K loop is completed.
  3. Each runner may have as many pacers as they like, however only one pacer at a time can accompany the runner.
  4. All pacers must wear a pacer numer that matches the runner whom they are pacing.
  5. Pacers do not pay an entry fee and are welcome to all of the aid that the runner receives.
  6. Pacers will be required to follow the same set of rules as the racer.
  7. Pacers must be over 18 years of age or have the signed permission from a parent or legal guardian.
  8. Runners ages 60 and older may have a pacer for the entire 100 mile or 100K distance.
  9. Pacer are for mental support rather than physical support.
  10. Pacer may not provide ANY physical support at any time other than at a crew accessible aid station. This includes helping a runner up to his/her feet who has fallen, lancing a blister or massaging a cramp etc. However it is the pacers duty to provide physical aid if the runner is in physical danger. The runner will be DQ'd but SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE CONCERN !
  11. Pacers may not "Mule" for a runner at any time. Muling is carrying and/or supplying water, extra clothing, medical supplies or any other type of aid to the runner. This provides an unfair advantage to those who choose not to use a pacer.
  12. Each pacer must clearly identify themselves when passing through the aid stations.

What type of weather should I expect for the Pumkin Holler Hunnerd Races ?

While October is normally a very mild month, there can be very warm and humid temperatures as well as sub-freezing temps. This is Oklahoma and we can have just about any kind of weather, so come prepared for all possible conditions. The following are the historical weather statistics.
Normal High – 75
Normal Low – 53
Record high of 96
Record low of 26
Average Humidity 67%
October in Tahlequah has an average of nine rain days

When does it get dark in Oklahoma and what time is sunrise ?

Twilight Begins 7:06 AM
Sunrise – 7:31 AM
Sunset – 6:50 PM
Twilight Ends 7:14 PM

Are headlights/flashlights mandatory?

Headlights or flashlights are mandatory for all 100K and 100 mile runners.  We require that you have one in your possession for all runners leaving out on lap two .  Whether you actually use it is up to you, but we need you to have one in case of emergency ! The course is tree lined and is very dark even with the 89% moon phase on Oct. 15th. The full moon will be on October 11, 2011. Head lamps are not just for you to see the road, more importantly, they are for any traffic on the road to see you.

Do all the races start at 8am?

No. The 25K does not start till 10am. We plan on starting the three longer distance races at 8am according to the official time of day as determined by this website.  We will start on time regardless of your whether you still looking for your socks or are still in the Porta-Potty.

How is this race timed?

TATUR Timing will do the timing for the Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd.  All paid entrants will be required to wear a timing chip.  The timing chip MUST go on your shoe. If you do not plan on wearing shoes, you will be required to ask the timing crew for a neoprene ankle bracelet that attaches by Velcro.

If you decide to wear the chip on your hat, water bottle, or or any location higher than your ankle, your chip will not read as you go over the timing mat and you WILL BE NOT GET CREDIT FOR THAT LAP.  NO EXCUSES - NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you lose your timing chip or do not return the chip once you finish or drop out of the race, you will be charged $30 by the race directors. Your chip on your shoe is a signal to all race organizers that you are an active participant in the race.  If you put it in your pocket or remove it from below your ankle for any reason, it is the same as saying, "I am out of the race and no longer wish to continue"

Do we also have to wear a race number?

YES !!   Your race number must go on the front of your body facing DIRECTLY forwards. Race numbers may be folded as long as all numbers are clearly visible. Several volunteers will be out on the course and need to be able to see your number at all times. Numbers must be pinned with four safety pins.

Since you most likely will be shedding/changing shirts and jackets at least once in the race, we reccommend pinning your number to your shorts,  tights, or hat.  If your number is not visible, you WILL be asked to stop running until you re-pin it in a visible place facing forwards.  PLEASE DO NOT PIN YOUR NUMBERS ANGLED TO THE SIDE !

Will there be an early start for those of us who do not think we can finish in 30 hours?

No! We urge you to think about entering the 100K if you do not think you can beat the 30 hour time limit. The volunteers and the timing crew will be working for 35 hours straight. We do not want to make them work for 36 hours straight. You guys and girls are the extreme endurance athletes, not the volunteers.

After I finish or drop, can I run back out on the course to run a friend or a family member into the finish line?

Not without a pacer number. The timing crew will have extra pacer numbers and safety pins. Please take off your regular number so that we do not count you as an active participant. You also cannot be on the course with a timing chip if you have already finished or dropped from your race.

What are the medical risks associated with running an ultramarathon?

Each runner is responsible or their own actions. It is crucial that you are physically and mentally prepared for the stresses of the race. We will utilize the local EMS services in case of a medical emergency. It is important for the runner to recognize the potential physical and mental stresses that may evolve from participation in this race. These include, but are not limited to, extreme temperatures of heat and cold, hypothermia, dehydration, heat stroke, renal failures, seizures, hypoglycemia, disorientation and total mental and physical exhaustion. Each participant must continuously monitor his/herself and understand their limitations. Remember that you are responsible for your own well being during this race.

What do I need to do if I want to "drop" (withdraw from the race) ?

First, we highly reccommend that before you decide to quit, that you find a spot to sit, or lay down, get your heart rate down, totally re-hydrate, eat some food and relax for at least 15 minutes and ask yourself this question, "Am I quitting because I do not have the mental toughness to push through the pain and discomfort, or am I quitting because I may inflict REAL and permanent damage to my body by continuing.

Poor reasons for quitting are: blisters, nausea, cramping, mild dehydration, falling asleep on your feet, mild joint pain, being cold, or being hot. Remember that most runners will bounce back after the inevitable "low-spots"

Great reasons for quitting or getting medical attention are: severe dehydration, extreme and persistent dizziness, sharp and acute pain, chest pain or irregular heart rate, hyponatremia symptoms, or any other condition that will may cause permanent damage to your body.

What is the procedure if I DO decide to drop !

If you can make it to an aid station, you need to try !  We cannot guarantee that we will have a vehicle to get you in the middle of the course if it is not an emergency.  Once you get to an  aid station, give the aid station workers your timing chip and remove your race number. Once your timing chip comes off, there is no longer an option to change your mind so BE SURE !!

Failure to return your chip to a race official could result in a search and rescue, which could be at runner’s expense.

If the aid station is in a location with a phone signal, they will do their best to call your family, a friend, or crew member to get you.  If that is not an option, you may have to wait at the aid station until someone can give you a ride back to the start finish. Waiting time could be five minutes or up to three hours, depending on manpower.

Will this race fill up?

No. We will not cap the entries, but we cannot guarantee you a shirt, medal, belt buckle etc. if you do not sign up by October 15th.

Will you offer training runs for this race?

Yes please click the Training link

Will there be nearby camping spots.

Yes camping space is available at Eagle Bluff Resort/Campground literally right next to the start/finish.  Please call 1-800-OK-RIVER or email them at float@eaglebluffresort.com for reservations and any other questions. Also please thank them for letting us use their facilities as they usually close for the year sround the first of October.  The cost is $5 per person and an extra $5 per spot if you want a non-promitave spot.

There are primitive campsites and sites with water and electrical hookups. The campsite has restrooms and several showers which will be available to both campers and all race finishers.

Will we recieve any type of finishers award ?

All Hunnerd Mile runners completing the race within the 30-hour time limit will be awarded a multi-colored custom designed belt buckle. 100K finishers will receive a multi-colored custom designed medal. 50K and 25K finishers will receive a brass custom designed medal. The overall male and female winners will receive a custom designed award.
