In 2005 Nickel Preserve staff completed an Elk Reintroduction Implementation Plan The initial group of elk arrived on the preserve on March 8th. Herd size for the release was 20 animals, including fifteen females (10 adults, 5 sub-adults) and 5 males (3 adults, 2 sub-adults), with 20 more possible the following spring.

Course Directional Description 100M/100K/50K
The Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd - 100M, 100K, 50K Course
Directions: The start of the race is at the primitive campground just north of the Iron Bridge. The course consists of a 0.5 mile leg out to the loop. All loops are ran in a clockwise direction, and you'll return to the start/finish at the campground after each loop. The 50K and 100K runners turn left when they reach the loop. The Hunnerd milers will turn right and do an out-and-back totaling seven miles and will return to the start/finish and then do three of the 50K loops. Seven miles into the loop, at the the "Out-N-Back" aid station, all runners will run northeast for approx 1.5 miles, turnaround, and come back to the Out-N-Back aid station and then continue southwest on the loop.
All intersections will be marked and confidence ribbons will be placed every 1/4 mile or so.
Glow Sticks will be hung for the nighttime hours.
You will cross a few cattle guards along the way. While it is possible to run across the cattle guards, please use caution in crossing them especially if they are wet.
