Wilma Harris - Groove Pilots - Half Beginner 11-12 min/mile
All Run Leaders
Wilma Harris
This year I turned 50, and I thought to myself "you need to get your rear in gear and get in better shape"! I had been running some on the treadmill at the gym and decided to enter some 5K races because the treadmill was getting pretty boring! So, I entered a couple of 5K races this spring and finished them without too much problem.
Then I heard about the training that Runners World was going to be doing for the Tulsa Route 66 marathon in November and decided to sign up for the half. When we started in June, I was thinking " I can barely run 3 miles, how am I going to run 13.1 in 5 months?" I was put in a group called the "Groove Pilots" and the run leader was Guy Wolcott, who kept all of us very motivated! Guy is a great run leader because he is always positive and really makes everyone feel like they can accomplish any goal.
I believe you are much more likely to reach your running goals when you are in a group and are accountable to each other. Brian and Kathty are great, and if you follow their training schedule you will be successful. Everyone in our group finished the Route 66 half marathon and are ready to tackle another half. Guy moved up to the beginning marathon, so now I am the new Groove Pilot leader. Many of us are still in the group, so we decided to keep the name. I will try to do as good a job as Guy did with the group, but have big shoes to fill! |
