My running background is pretty short, but I feel like I have accomplished and overcome a lot in a short period of time.
I had a rude awakening 4 years ago when I had to take a group picture for work. I couldn’t believe that fat red head was me. I cut the picture out and put it on my desk vowing that I would make whatever changes necessary to lose weight and be healthy.
I started out changing my diet, the weight started to slowly come off, so I signed up with a personal trainer at my gym, for whatever reason I had an irrational fear of the treadmill and pretty much all things running, I would break out in cold sweats anytime she tried to get me to run.
I travel a lot for my job, and was given an extended project in South Texas. I knew that to stay in shape I would probably have to break down and make myself run since I didn’t have a gym and/or trainer that I could pack up and take along with me. So, I downloaded the C25K podcast. It took me a few weeks but I eventual made it through week one of the program on the treadmill. When I got home I was able to run one mile on the treadmill, which was a major accomplishment for me.
After the first mile I decided that I wanted to finish my first 5K, I signed up for a training program at an undisclosed location and continued with the training.
I ran my first 5K in June of 2008 and was diagnosed with my first serious running injury; a stress fracture in my knee, in July. After 3 months on crutches and a stint in physical therapy my friends and family couldn’t wait for me to get my grumpy rear end running again. I started out slow but eventually built the miles back up. I found a flyer for the Runners World training program and decided to give it a try. I completed the questionnaire with the OKC half in mind but was talked into training for the full. Since I didn’t know any better I trained for and completed the OKC marathon in April. Along the way I have completed the Route 66 quarter marathon twice, the Cowtown half and several 5Ks.
I suffered another set back in July and had to drop out of the fall training program. But, I am back and ready to tackle another half marathon or three. And who knows, maybe one of these days I might just attempt another full. |
