Sue Marolf - Half Squatches to OKC - Half Beginners 12-13 min/mile
All Run Leaders
Sue Marolf
My name is Sue Marolf and I have been married for 27 years to a very understanding man, John, and have 3 wonderful children; Tony, who is 21 who will be graduating from college next semester in computer graphic design (anyone hiring?), Samantha 19 (going into nursing) and Luke who is 16 and class vice president at Union (I'm a proud mama). I am the co-leader of the Half Squatches for the OKC 1/2 Marathon.
I started running 2 years ago because my older sister Linda called me up and said that she had made a "bucket list" on which was completing the Tulsa Run-5K before she was 50 (She was 47). She said she needed someone to run with and asked if I would help her by going to the Tulsa Runner's World Newbie Group. I did not know what to expect but after that first Saturday I was excited and RELIEVED.
Nobody was expecting me to run fast or far, everyone was totally supportive (Thanks Candace). We started running to lightpole then walking to lightpole. Half way through the training we decided to go for the 9 mile Tulsa Run. Well, did I learn alot. I learned how initially total strangers can be so supportive. Thanks to Tatur Dan for running with Linda and I in the rain (we were planning on stopping but noooo, he decided to run with us), Kathy for her tips, Ken taking pictures of everyone, etc. I am claustrophopic so I learned that I have to be on the edge of the street and look only at the pavement until the crowd thins out.
I learned that people cheering on the sidelines can give a dose of energy the equivalent of a double expresso. I learned that I need to figure out where the bathroom possibilities exist. Linda and I finished not only the Tulsa Run last year but the Route 66 1/2 Marathon in November. YEA! The 2 best things of training is that I am getting regular exercise and meeting incredible people. I have made several friends and the group is like.. amazing. I am totally in awe at how much time and effort Kathy and Brian put into all this on top of running a business and doing their own runs -do you ever sleep?
I tentatively plan to complete the 2010 Route 66 Marathon (it's still a little surreal to me). I would really like to get into trail running. To the Half Sqautches: I have not been running for years or for long distances to offer much advise but I promise that I will try to answer or find the answer to any question you ask. I promise to to be there for you to the best of my ability. I promise to cheer for you. We will have fun. Thanks to Linda, Kathy, Brian, Candace, Dave, Ken, and Joe |
