Race Report by Robin Hudson

Man the heat about killed us all.  There was no wind and it was at least 130 ° out there.  I was hoping to do way better than I did but I just did not have it.  I guess being sick for 2 weeks and not running I could use that as an excuse but I won’t.  It was the dang heat that got me.

As the race started we all felt pretty good but we (Marv, Dave, Debbie, Teresa, Tom and Chris) were all asking ourselves what in the heck were we thinking of, running in 130 ° degree weather.  I decided to start with Marv because we had run the Porter race so well together that I thought it would be a great idea.  At the first km we were running strong but a little behind what Marv was shooting for.  We began to speed up and as we started Marv began to become a little white dot in front of me.  The wind in my sails had given out.  Chris and Tom must have taken off like tornados because I only saw them at the start line after that never saw them again.  In the mean time Debbie, Dave and Teresa were running not too far behind us and Debbie said she was beginning to fade as well.  As I made the turn I was asking myself why I had decided to torture myself in such a way but decided that all sane runners love the torture and would not have it any other way.

Just past the halfway mark there was this guy and we decided that we would play tag.  I would catch and pass him and then he would do the same with me.  We decided when we were running whoever made it to the finish line first would buy the first beer….HA!!  As I was at the 4k I knew that Marv was finishing …man I will have to say he has been training so hard and well for his marathon that I know he could out run us all.  He is my inspiration…I want to be just like Marv when I grow up….HA!!

Now that I had a good game of cat and mouse going I thought that I might just be able to beat this guy to the finish line running up the hill to the finish and boom he passes me at the finish line…He did get the first round of Gatorade it was way too hot for me to drink a beer…at that point I think if I would have had a beer I would have passed out on the spot.  I know real trail runners do not have this problem!!!  I had just gotten my drink and turned back to the finish and there was Teresa, Dave and Debbie all finishing together.  I think we all just wanted to lie down and die…actually if there had been a nice stiff breeze I think I might have.  It was just too dang hot to die without the breeze.

Debbie and Marv both won awards in there age divisions…You need to ask Debbie about hers though….It is a great story!!

I have not decided on the Turkey & Taturs race I guess I could do the 10k.  I might have to walk it but I guess I could do it.  What happened to everyone doing the trail race this Saturday?
